Chris's passing was hardly mentioned in the usual media, TV...I see others making the same comment. Nor I think has there been a programme about him. Big, sad omission, he deserves and deserved more
recognition for his talent and his music.

Very sad to learn, belatedly, of Chris's passing. First saw him with Monty Sunshine and others at The Dome, Brighton around 1959-60. Last time was at The Hawth, Crawley, 2018. Fine musician, great
entertainer. Somehow he was always there with his wonderful music. I will miss him a lot.

A year has already passed without Chris and I still can't believe he died . I first saw him in the White Hart pub in Southall when I was 17. From that time my Dad came with me each week and to weekly
gigs at 100 Oxford Street. The Tram Shed, Wood Green Jazz Club, and concerts far and wide frequently having a ride home in Chris's Lagonda with Ottilie. I arranged to stay with a friend in Newcastle
where the band was playing. I arrived at the station and immediately Chris bought my ticket. My babies were weaned on his music and now in their fifties and sixties still play it. I visit a son in
Orlando where I'm greeted on arrival with a concert video. A local jazz band leader introduces me as 'A lady who knows Chris Barber' which leads to questions and conversation (and drinks) with many
American jazzers to whom Chris was king. Chris played sometimes when I had a pub near Nottingham and in Windsor for my mum's 100th and my 70th Birthday in 2008. All the guests at the party received
the Jubilee Stomp CD from Chris and he walked round all the tables and introduced himself and chatted with my guests because I was in a wheelchair with a broken hip. A huge part of my life is missing
since the last London concert and it didn't feel right when I saw the band later without him. God Bless, Chris.

How did I miss this sad news and why was the wonderful Chris Barber not more widely commemorated on his passing? Being a mere 50-something, I was introduced to Chris's music through my Dad, an avid
fan, and was immediately caught up in the authentic, wonderful sound that he and his band created. One of the greatest joys in life is listening to one of his concerts with the Grosse Rundfunk
Orchestra of Berlin in the 80's - no Barber fan should miss hearing it, it surpasses all description. Bless your heart, Mr Barber - thank you for the music and I'm glad we came with you, down the
Mississipi to New Orleans.....

Best wishes to all family and friends at this sad time - though hopefully full of the consolation of an extraordinary musical life well lived. I came to Chris's music when I started exploring my
father's record collection as a child - he had a number of 50s LPs. I was delighted to be able to tell my father that I'd been to see Chris and the band play in the 2010s and that they were still
wonderful.

In de jaren vijftig kocht ik mijn eerste singeltje van Chris Barber: Ice cream met op de achterkant Down by the riverside. Vrolijke opwekkende muziek!
was zo aardig, zo gewoon.

Potěšil mnoho srdcí vždy lahodícím zvukem, perfektně šlapající rytmikou, lehkostí sóla, nezaměnitelným feelingem v radosti dixielandu i ve smutku blues. Tož dík. R.I.P.

I am deeply affected by the passing of Chris Barber. Since the acquisition of my first Storyville singles in 1959/60 and the first attendance of a concert in 1961, he has always accompanied me. Since
then, during this very long period of time, I was able to witness the development of his bands and his music: from the six- piece-band to the Big Chris Barber Band, from the introduction of the
electric guitar to the addition of more and more reeds and brass. This development clearly shows that Chris Barber has never stopped musically. He was particularly interested in new ideas and
influences as well as their implementation, be it in music with his bands, or in interaction with other musicians and orchestras. I also got to know him personally in many conversations after
numerous concerts - always polite, always interested, always willing to answer every question. I don't think there's anyone else with such a comprehensive knowledge of jazz who identified himself as
much with his music, its evolution and broadening as Chris Barber. That is why I have always felt it a great honour to contribute to the Chris Barber website and discography. What remains is the
memory of a unique person and musician whom I was able to get to know and who always meant a great deal to me in human and musical terms and this will continue in future.

When I was 12 years old my father played a Chris Barber tape in our car and I immediately fell in love with the sweet sounds of Spanish Castles. With my father who had been a huge fan since 1963 I
went to see Mr Barber and his great band several times. A few months after my father passed away in 2005, I found a DVD in a small music store with the concert for the BBC - it was exactly the same
recording as the tape that got me into loving jazz and dixieland.
Thank you so much for the music, Mr Barber. Have fun playing your trombone in heaven with your dear friends, and don't forget to say hello to my dad in the audience.
My deepest condolences to Mr Barber's family and friends.

Greenwich Council put on Summer concerts at Well Hall Pleasaunce. I was going to miss the Barber band in '69 (?) until a friend put me straight, "He started it all". Arguably CB did - Lonnie, the
trad boom. I don't think i've witnessed a duff show. Without CB's importing blues stars the UK's beat boom would have been a different animal. his 60s/70s bands covered a wide range of music from
When The Saints . . to East European folk tunes in strange meters without solos that tested patience. For the last few years the set list didn't change much but arrangements varied from one visit to
next. It was good to see, over the years, other artists' affection for CB, eg a Croydon concert when Andy Fairweather-Lowe guested first half and Chris Farlowe second (a superb "Stormy Monday"
avoiding the usual lyrics !). And a very nice man, usually chatting with fans before, half-time + at the end of a gig. A gentle and unassuming giant of achievement.

Chris Barber's band was possibly the first jazz I heard. One of his LP's was the certainly the first in my record collection - At The London Palladium 1961, with guest star Joe Harriot. The inclusion
of the latter on a "trad" record is to some a heresy but it never phased Chris. He was not afraid to experiment and his hook ups with American blues performers was important in the establishment of
that genre in the UK. As I have continued to explore jazz's different manifestations - from Ornette Coleman's Free Jazz to the multifaceted UK "new jazz" scene, I have retained a soft spot for the
grand old man of British jazz. Thank you Chris for those many hours of pleasure over the last 60 years.

Boom might have died, but Chris simply built on it and carved out his own successful niche. His legacy will be the body of work he has left in his recordings and the influence he had on the music
scene. Thanks Chris.

So sorry to hear of Chris Barber's passing! I grew up on the music as my dad was also an April baby and just a few years younger. He absolutely loved, loved the band and has quite a few of their
albums. Dad was quite the dancer in his day and I have such good memories of Chris Barber band blaring through the house as he was dancing away with mom. Thank you for the music!

Chris I will never forget you. I don't remember how often I was in Chris Barber concerts here in Germany (Colgne Dortmund Balve Bergheim Olpe ....) and had the opportunuty to have a chat with Chris
several times. His warm-hearted, friendly way, his performance on stage and his virtuosity on the trombone were so unique.

What can we really say? From a personal perspective, although like many, a fan from the early days, it was only when Chris came to NZ in 2000 and we assisted with CD sales on the tour, that I got to
chat to Chris on a regular basis and we shared a love for cars and motorsport.
Not many can say that they not only got to meet their heroes, but were on first name terms. Like many true fans, I was probably dragged along with Chris's various departures from the strict New
Orleans music, and am all the better for it.
At least we have many CDs, DDs, YiuTube clips, even LP's, EPs and singles as a fantastic legacy.
What a shame he was never knighted, as if any musician deserved it, Chris did.
RiP Chris and thanks for so much.

Dearest Chris,
You were in my life longer than any other person (apart from a couple of older cousins) and I had the honour of seeing the birth and growth of the band in all its various forms and styles just after
leaving school. You were so kind and protective and you and Ottilie often drove me home from far flung venues in the Lagonda. Now I'm old too. The thousands of hours of live and recorded music was
enough for several lifetimes but my grandchildren had the opportunity to enjoy your wonderful music at my 70th. Now the Gt grandchildren will be the guardians of my Chris Barber recordings. Remember
playing on the BA flight to New Orleans a few days after Caroline was born? A surreal experience. You have been a very special man and the music and musicians all benefitted. I've had condolences
from around the world from people I had forgotten. All remembered my sincere love of your music. I'll miss looking forward to the next concert. God Bless you, Chris. Say hi to my Dad who first
brought me to jazz clubs to see you because I was under age. xxx

Ria and Wim Wigt(Thursday, 04 March 2021 23:00)
The honour to work with Chris Barber and his band presenting his timeless music worldwide for 50 years.
In 1968, Wim Wigt as a student organised his first concert with the CHRIS BARBER Jazz and blues Band in the Netherlands.
From then until 2019 we were able to enjoy his beautiful music. Resulting in working together on a baffling 15.000 concerts with Chris worldwide.
Creating tours and events. Broadening the interest for your music. Making jazz available for a worldwide audience. We inspired each other all these years.
Concerts which were of an extremely high quality of music. Chris stood for perfection. He thought about everything. Handpicking the very best jazz musicians and staff to support him and his
band.
We understood each other, we had the same thoughts and standards in mind. We trusted him to do the utmost in his professional activities.
He was never ill and made it to every concert, except the one time he was stranded in the snow on a German highway, and when he was run over by a male sheep near his home in England.
Chris was for a 1000% focused on music and his work. Almost every day during the tours and beyond he would call and email us to discuss ongoing tours, the business, the records or just to have a
chat.
Also other matters would be discussed - if it weren't cars or motorracing, it was antiques or economics. Chris was extensively interested in all of this. We still miss talking to him on a daily
basis.
Together we worked day and night to release many of his recordings of that period. Offering his audiences a memory of Chris to take home with them.
In the eighties we, together with Chris, took up a great project - the Chris Barber Collection -. The Timeless Historical series in which we both invested all our knowledge of music, together with a
great team of experts. Bringing the jazz from the first recordings on 78 rpms to the nowadays listening standards by recording and editing note for note in the spirit of the traditional jazz in its
maiden days. Chris wanted to preserve the music of those early days for all of us now and in the future. Appreciated by many jazz fans and the descendants of the performers on these early recordings.
Timeless jazz being preserved forever.
Chris it was lovely to work with you and we will cherish your legacy forever.

Chris Barber was one of my boyhood heroes and he and Monty Sunshine inspired me to stick with clarinet lessons as a child and get into my first band at the age of 12. I went on to have a lifetime
playing clarinet and sax in many semi pro bands, mostly jazz. I had the pleasure of playing on the same bill as the Barber band on a number of occasions in venues around the West of Scotland.
I am so sad to hear of his passing and it feels like the last man standing from my youth is gone. What a band he joins though beyond the pearly gates! Halcox, Ball, Bilk, Lightfoot, Sunshine and many
others!

Chris war ein grossartiger Jazz und Bluesmusiker! - Mein Vorbild!

Chris Barber is one of the unsung heroes of popular music. He personally brought Sister Rosetta Tharpe and other notable US blues & gospel musicians to the UK. In 1957, he brought Rosetta Tharpe
on tour and re-energized her career. I was in contact with Chris in 2007, being involved in Philadelphia with a tribute concert for Rosetta that funded her missing headstone. He really loved her, and
if you look at the tour photos by Terry Cryer, it is plain to see their bond. Chris was more than a musician, he was a true gentleman who helped bring people together. Amen. Peace to his family.

We have lost a founding member of the Traditional jazz community in the UK; a formidable musical innovator in his own right and the man who did most to bring the principal figures of American Blues
back to Britain in the 1950s. He will be mourned not only by the jazz community but also by later rock stars like Sir Van Morrison, Paul Jones and others who recognized that without Chris they would
not so easily have heard the music that inspired them. We can only be glad that his musical legacy on-record is so richly prolific for future generations to learn from, to appreciate and enjoy. R.I.P

Dear Family, band-members and friends of Mr. Chris Barber,
Herewith I send to you all my sincere condolances from an admirer from the Netherlands.
As an amateur Cornet player I have been listening to CHRIS since my first notes to play.
During my stay in Oxford (1955) for a few months I had the privilege to visit some concerts
of Chris Barber and his band in London => Oxford Street 100 Club.
Chris ....WE WILL MISS YOU!

It completed a wonderful and memorable evening.

Very sad news indeed. I have followed Chris for several years which began at the White Hart in Southall in the late 50's. I was privileged to meet him several times particularly when the band was
playing at the Birmingham Rep and found him a really nice and a highly intelligent man. His contribution to jazz in the UK and beyond is massive and from a personal point of view I am truly grateful
for the pleasure he has given me over the years. RIP

The end of n era. I changed from school recorder to clarinet when i bought my first Chris Barber record - the World Is Waiting For The Sunrise - in 1955. And we saw the band at Watford Town Hall that
same year. I spent months trying to be Monty Sunshine and have enjoyed a full life in traditional jazz all thanks to Chris and HIS dedication to the music. Rest in Peace Chris

So sad to hear Chris has left us. I grew up listening to Chris Barber, I remember when I was little my Dad played his Chris Barber records very loud and would tell me to run to the end of the terrace
to see if I could hear it. I was lucky enough to see Chris Barber and his band play lots of times and meet them as Dad became friends with them and helped to organise the concerts at the Green Lawns
Hotel in Falmouth (Garras Jazz) and also at my school Penryn Comprehensive.
Chris, it is because of you I love Jazz so much, thank you for your brilliant music x

I had wanted to personally thank Chris for inspiring my late father for so many years, but alas just before my partner and I were due to see him in Potters Bar a couple of years ago he had a fall and
couldn't play with the band. So this message is a poor and late substitute for that, but anyway...
My dad, Jim, loved Chris and Lonnie's music, and went to countless of his concerts in the 1990s and 2000s. The band were always friendly and accessible, chatting with auduence members in the bar
afterward. My dad's old room is still full of Chris Barber LPs, and he had so many of Chris's CDs (and so little space for them) he had to remove them from the cases and keep them in a folder,
carefully and neatly labelled.
I fondly recall going with my dad to The Walkern Club in the early 90s to see Chris's band when John Slaughter played with them, and to the Wyllyots centre in Potters Bar some years later.
Memories of my beloved dad will forever be entwined with the music of Chris Barber. Thank you, Chris. Rest in peace.

I was about 12 when I first heard his music, way back in the mid-70s, when an uncle lent me a cassette of his. Now I'm pushing 60, but there is still barely a day goes by that I don't hear a track or
three of his.
He made so much great music, both live and in the studio, and influenced so many more who became great in their own right. He was also a delight to talk to after concerts, happy to share his immense
knowledge.
This crazy world in which we live is a better place because of him. Thank you, Chris, and may you R.I.P. If ever anyone deserved it.....

Chris was a big influence on my musical life. He introduced me to music I didn't know about or understand, at the time. He played it all with passion and enthusiasm. His band was sheer
entertainment.
I saw the band as a child in the mid seventies. They played a fair amount of blues numbers. I didn't know what blues was then, but it got under my skin just as much as a lot of the standard set. I
was too young at the time to know the band standards, but have since revisited the repertoire many times.
A few years after see the band I started to learn the clarinet. When I wasn't trying to play classical I was turning to LPs of the Chris Barber band try to learn the tunes. I found some incredibly
difficult, so I gives one a new appreciation of how good the musicians in Chris's band were.
Chris was a big presence in British rock music with people from blues/ rock jamming with him. Rolling Stones members and Alexis Korner were some. But as part-owner of the Marquee club he was
introduced to more rock musicians and played with the likes of Rory Gallagher. He guested with members of Deep Purple and was a real friend to music. Far and wide his influence has been.
It is a great loss to see such a stalwart leave us. But I have to be thankful that he managed to perform for so long and gave us so much to admire and appreciate.
Thank you Chris Barber. Thank you for entertaining us. You made our lives better.

Very sad news, and reading his obits I’d forgotten just how influential Chris was to the British music scene from the 1950s onwards. His music started my love for jazz. A great-uncle of mine died in
1983 when I was just 11 years old, and he bequeathed me his copy of the 1959 LP ‘The Chris Barber Band Box’. I’ve no idea why I was the recipient of the record but I instantly fell in love with the
music, particularly ‘Hiawatha Rag’ which is still the best version I’ve ever heard. To cut a long story short, this led to my learning to play the trumpet and joining a band of fellow youthful
musicians 5 or 6 years later, and then another band later on. Sadly, I don’t play much anymore but without that ‘kick-start’ I’d never have had all those enjoyable years playing and making so many
good friends along the way. RIP Chris, and thank you.

Being born in 1956 in a small town in Southern Germany, my first live experience with Jazz was when Chris Barber was regularly giving concerts in the somewhat stuffy civic centre of Aalen, the county
seat. Since then (and since listening to Louis Armstrong on records), Jazz has been my favourite type of music, although my taste has somewhat changed. I still remember vividly Chris Barber's good
humour, exuberance, technical prowess and stage presence. He was a true messenger of Jazz.

One of the greatest jazz players of all time has left us, what a very sad day. Since my first Chris Barber concert in 1974 many more followed, adding up to a hundred concerts over the past 45 years,
and I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of them. Chris' approach to traditional jazz was always very inspiring and has certainly made me a better musician. I had the great fortune to play with Chris
and Pat myself at the Savoy Jazzmen's jubilee concert in 1997, an unforgettable event. Chris Barber certainly counts as one of the all time greats in jazz music and his contribution to jazz can't be
overestimated. Fortunately the many records, music cassettes, CD's and DVD's allow us to continue to enjoy his music. RIP Chris.

Neil Watson(Wednesday, 03 March 2021 10:04)
Over the space of nearly 40 years, I saw Chris at least eight times and usually asked him to sign one of his old records. He was never anything less than the perfect gentleman. His contribution to
post-war music in the UK (and Germany) cannot be underestimated, as a pivotal figure in the Dixieland revival movement, a proponent and supporter of some of the greatest stars of blues and
rhythm'n'blues and his all-encompassing approach to music, including electric blues, American folk music (skiffle) and latterly expanding his repertoire to include the Ellington Cotton Club period.
The last time I met him in person, he was 88 years old and standing at the door of Cadogan Hall, shaking the hands of his fans; the last time I saw him, he was on the live stage of the Ealing Jazz
Festival, pleased to be there and leading his parade band around to 'When the Saints Go Marching In'. I will miss him immensely.

A sad loss to jazz and blues fans everywhere. I first met Chris when he was married to my Late sister Naida in the early sixties. He introduced me to the blues with playing examples from his vast
collection of 78's at the flat he shared with my sister in Maida Vale. And, on my birthday he visited with me at home and gave me a handful of blues 78's including Ida Cox's' Death Letter Blues, and
Kokomo Arnold's Old Sister Jane Right Across the Hall, and a few more. I was in my teens then, but he started a lifelong passion that still consumes me today now I'm well into my 80's
Thank you for introducing me to so much joy in my life.

Chris, your band was a constant soundtrack through my childhood in the 1980s and the fact I still play jazz trombone today is in no small part down to that little boy you inspired back in those days.

Chris's passing was hardly mentioned in the usual media, TV...I see others making the same comment. Nor I think has there been a programme about him. Big, sad omission, he deserves and deserved more recognition for his talent and his music.

Very sad to learn, belatedly, of Chris's passing. First saw him with Monty Sunshine and others at The Dome, Brighton around 1959-60. Last time was at The Hawth, Crawley, 2018. Fine musician, great entertainer. Somehow he was always there with his wonderful music. I will miss him a lot.

Dear Sir, keep swingin, wherever you are. I miss you deeply.
On the 2nd anniversary I think of you and hear your music.

A year has already passed without Chris and I still can't believe he died . I first saw him in the White Hart pub in Southall when I was 17. From that time my Dad came with me each week and to weekly gigs at 100 Oxford Street. The Tram Shed, Wood Green Jazz Club, and concerts far and wide frequently having a ride home in Chris's Lagonda with Ottilie. I arranged to stay with a friend in Newcastle where the band was playing. I arrived at the station and immediately Chris bought my ticket. My babies were weaned on his music and now in their fifties and sixties still play it. I visit a son in Orlando where I'm greeted on arrival with a concert video. A local jazz band leader introduces me as 'A lady who knows Chris Barber' which leads to questions and conversation (and drinks) with many American jazzers to whom Chris was king. Chris played sometimes when I had a pub near Nottingham and in Windsor for my mum's 100th and my 70th Birthday in 2008. All the guests at the party received the Jubilee Stomp CD from Chris and he walked round all the tables and introduced himself and chatted with my guests because I was in a wheelchair with a broken hip. A huge part of my life is missing since the last London concert and it didn't feel right when I saw the band later without him. God Bless, Chris.

Denis Baroche 73 ans. La Réunion.

How did I miss this sad news and why was the wonderful Chris Barber not more widely commemorated on his passing? Being a mere 50-something, I was introduced to Chris's music through my Dad, an avid fan, and was immediately caught up in the authentic, wonderful sound that he and his band created. One of the greatest joys in life is listening to one of his concerts with the Grosse Rundfunk Orchestra of Berlin in the 80's - no Barber fan should miss hearing it, it surpasses all description. Bless your heart, Mr Barber - thank you for the music and I'm glad we came with you, down the Mississipi to New Orleans.....

I first heard Chris on my Aunts gramaphone and was entranced from the start. I have been collecting, and will continue to do so, his vinyls and CDs ever since. Not only was he a great jazz musician and innovator but also quite happy to chat to you if you as I have with him, the last time being The Apex big band concert night in I think 2017. God bless Chris, keep blowing in heaven.

A great man, always had time for his fans. At concerts he was always where fans could reach him before, during intervals and afterwards, standing up,you never saw him sitting down.A musician of the highest quality.
May he rest in peace and rise in glory.

Very sad news which I’ve only just read about while searching for the Big Band’s next visit to Malvern. I’m a Lifelong fan, the first concert I went to was in 1958. Condolences to Chris’s family, who must miss him very much. We have been to all his concerts in the Worcester and Malvern area and will continue to support Bob and all the band. Phil and Philippa

Best wishes to all family and friends at this sad time - though hopefully full of the consolation of an extraordinary musical life well lived. I came to Chris's music when I started exploring my father's record collection as a child - he had a number of 50s LPs. I was delighted to be able to tell my father that I'd been to see Chris and the band play in the 2010s and that they were still wonderful.

Díky mému tchánovi, který miloval jazz, objevil jsem LP z roku 1963 Chris Barber Hungary, a tak vlastně poznal skvělou kapelu, jejíž skladby poslouchám, kdykoli mám volnou chvilku. Díky a odpočinutí věčné a pokojné Chrisi a všem jeho blízkým zesnulým.

So sad to hear of Chris's passing. I've been a fan since the 1950s. (Usher Hall in Edinburgh). Have since taken every opportunity to attend band concerts and Chris was always happy to have a few words before and after the gigs.

Sad to learn of Chris's passing. I worked on many 2 band concerts with Chris when working with Monty and scores of 3 B concerts with Kenny, Chris and Acker. So many great memories from those days with great musicians... R.I.P. Chris, hope you've met up with Pat, Monty, Lonnie and all the others to have gone before.... Syd the roadie..

Such sad news, but what fantastic memories of Chris, his many Bands and colleagues over the years and most of all the uniquely wonderful Live performances. From Shepherds Bush, London originally, my schoolfriends Mike Kennedy , John (Herb) Dixon and I have followed the legend since the mid 1950s and will be listening to the great recordings for the rest of our lives. It was always a privilege to speak with Chris at his gigs and he was always extremely gracious and friendly. John Boulton and Cecily Hughes

In de jaren vijftig kocht ik mijn eerste singeltje van Chris Barber: Ice cream met op de achterkant Down by the riverside. Vrolijke opwekkende muziek! Dank daarvoor Mr. Barber, rust zacht.

I am very, very sad. Chris Barber was a wonderful man. The first time, I heard Chris and his men at 18th november 1965 in Reutlingen. The last time I saw Chris in Stuttgart at 8th november 2014, nearly fifty years later. In Stuttgart I had the opportunity before the concert to talk several minutes with Chris. Finally we shaked the hands, and we wished each other all the best. RIP
Jenni (Saturday, 27 March 2021 00:56)
We saw Chris and the band a number of times and the atmosphere was just brilliant every time. Even with a leg in plaster at one concert, Chris was wheeled on stage in a wheelchair and played like he always did - with absolute perfection. It was also great to see him selling his own CDs in the foyer after the shows and happily chatting to everyone - what a gent. I have so many happy memories of those concerts.

I think I first saw Chris at the 100 club but it was so long ago I cannot be sure. Have followed his career ever since and attended as many concerts as I could. Nothing better than to immerse ones self in the finest music ever written and performed by truly great musicians of whom Chris was at the very top. He is irreplaceable and leaves a huge void in the world of great music. Hope Chris gets to jam with Pat, Monty, Lonnie, John S, John D and all the others who have gone before. What a band that will be!!
Thanks for so many many hours of total pleasure.
Gary Clark (Saturday, 20 March 2021 00:48)
My father Ray Clark was a great fan of Chris and his band and I accompanied him to many concerts over the years and grew to love his music as well. My father, who was a little older than Chris, died one day before Chris on the 1st March and we played Chris and Monty's Petit Fleur as we arrived at the funeral yesterday and exited to the 2011 recording of "When the Saints" from the Big Band. Many thanks for all the great music Chris on behalf of me and my father Ray Clark.
Tressy Pitt-Kerby (Thursday, 18 March 2021 20:53)
My Dad took me to see Chris when I was about 10. My first concert. I took my Dad to see Chris many years later - it was to be the last time as my Dad sadly passed away shortly afterwards. Dad wanted “Didn’t he ramble” played at his funeral, which we happily did. A firm favourite of Dad’s and I have many memories listening to Chris with him. Thank you Chris. RIP. X

Great man who I tried to speak to in the interval of every concert I was able to go to ,and to buy the records which Chris himself would sell.
Especially remember bumping into Chris, Monty and Pat in a Wimpy Bar in Birmingham (about 1957)just before another Town Hall concert. They were having a snack just like everyone else but didn’t speak on that occasion because you respected their privacy.I have listened to his music all my life and I just say Thank you for the music which has bought me great happiness and for bringing it out to us in the provinces.

Milan Hala (Friday, 12 March 2021 15:55)

Thank you Chris, for all the wonderful music.

I am deeply affected by the passing of Chris Barber. Since the acquisition of my first Storyville singles in 1959/60 and the first attendance of a concert in 1961, he has always accompanied me. Since then, during this very long period of time, I was able to witness the development of his bands and his music: from the six- piece-band to the Big Chris Barber Band, from the introduction of the electric guitar to the addition of more and more reeds and brass. This development clearly shows that Chris Barber has never stopped musically. He was particularly interested in new ideas and influences as well as their implementation, be it in music with his bands, or in interaction with other musicians and orchestras. I also got to know him personally in many conversations after numerous concerts - always polite, always interested, always willing to answer every question. I don't think there's anyone else with such a comprehensive knowledge of jazz who identified himself as much with his music, its evolution and broadening as Chris Barber. That is why I have always felt it a great honour to contribute to the Chris Barber website and discography. What remains is the memory of a unique person and musician whom I was able to get to know and who always meant a great deal to me in human and musical terms and this will continue in future.
